Info
CAMP is a 15-minute, coming-of-age female comedy short film, directed by Aimee Marciniak and written by Anne Lague. Filmed at a campgrounds in Fergus, Ontario, it follows two best friends whose friendship is tested in the face of social climbing, new romances, and a midnight initiation fight club. I provided production and post-production audio services alongside members of my thesis production group, Arrow Audio.
Since we filmed on location, the natural ambience proved to be a challenge when trying to capture clean dialogue, especially during outdoor scenes. We took full advantage of RX11 to remove background sound as needed. As an additional workaround, I recorded samples of natural ambience at different spots around the campsite, at different times of day. Thus, we had ambience tracks that could be blended in much more seamlessly with the outdoor dialogue than using stock ambience.
As an additional challenge, we had to sell the idea that the fictional camp was full of children, to compensate for the minimal extras that were visible in the film. To achieve this, I sourced tracks of various camp activities like chanting, swimming, soccer, and general playtime ambience. These tracks were edited to sound off-camera, and placed farther away in the sound field, to build out the universe of Camp Sparkside while explaining the lack of children and crowds on-screen.
